When we build a website from scratch we automatically optimise each page in a number of ways. First and foremost, the content on the website is king. Without appropriate copy on the website, all of the effort is for nothing. We structure the copy in a neat and logical manner (using headings and sub-headings where required) so that when the search engines pay a visit, they can easily get a good idea as to what's important and what isn't.
We also ensure that other areas of the website are search engine friendly - from the page titles at the top of your web browser (which is one of the most important elements from an SEO point of view) to the web addresses of the pages themselves.
Many websites use addresses that are nonsense to search engines as they don't include any information about the content of the page or keywords that can be used to find it, for example: www.mywebsite.co.uk/page.php?id=234. On a Source website, that page may instead be located at www.mywebsite.co.uk/services/home-security which is not only easier for people to read and remember, but clearly tells the search engines what can be found on the page.
There are many other techniques that can be employed to improve your search engine rankings - advertising your website on other websites and pay-per-click advertising are just the tip of the iceberg.
